55 5/30/2010 8:00 AM FL Indian Shores Indian Shores Beach 59 14 Capt Solo Explored a county made reef pile just off shore some fisherman found with their depth finder while kayaking. It was about 100yds out in 15ft water. Several culvert pipes covered in corals, sponges, etc. Vis was about 1-2 ft. Could not see pipes until less than 2ft away. Found 5+ft goliath grouper that scared me. Followed it into a pipe but could not see into the pipes, so decided to head back. Felt uneasy from the low vis. Most was about 1ft vis. Dove with the scooter from Adam. Made it out to the pipes and 1/2 way back to shore before battery died.

Have no desire to ever go to this beach again after finding there was NOTHING to look at. Once you got past the swim area, it became 100% silty in the entire water column, the entire bottom was silt covered, covering everything. No fish, critters, etc. Just silt and sponges of various colors.

Pipes were between the radio tower and square building, 70* W/SW on compass (facing shore compass read 250*)

Sea was GLASS SMOOTH! It was so smooth that during the sit time, we moored to the bouy in front of the Breakers Hotel and the line the boat was tied with went slack. We were able to get out and swim/snorkel on the glass smooth water in the breaker''s hotel reef. BEAUTIFUL day. Never seen anything like it before.

Chatted a lot with Capt Dave and his wife Lynn up on top. Carried the flag for the 1st dive.

Borrowed 3m shorty due to cold upwelling the day before. Temp got to low 60''s. Today it was warm again, so I didn''t need it on the 2nd dive. Saw lots of dead fish and other critters due to the cold snap.

76 8/15/2010 8:00 AM FL Sebastian Sebastian Inlet 30 15 Daniel Osmolski Went to explorer northern most reef points. Sebastian seems to be it. 20mi north in Melbourne it is still not very clear. Water super jazy and sandy due to low tide going out. Once past inlet it was very clear. had to keep from hitting rocks, pier/jetty and stay between jetty and fishing lines. On the way out, we saw manatee, snook, 100''s of bait fish, rays. At end of jetty/ about 20ft down we saw HUGE goliath grouper and lots of sharks. On the beach side we saw lots of reef fish on the rocks. Lots of coals and sponges. Want to do again at high tide. Was dangerous at low tide and the vis was poor.

Update: Found out later on we shouldn''t have dove where we did, but there was no signs. Well, we''re not sure if we could or couldn''t... it''s stated no diving in the middle of the channel, and we were hugging the shore line. Perhaps go out on the beach side next time to the end of the pier to look at the fish.

I jumped in without my bottom strap on like a n00b, and just fixed it on the platform.
Went over pre dive briefing, buddy checks, etc.
Ran the line, did no vis exit skill, practiced touch and go, need to work on bouyancy on the line when I can''t see, I was pulling it up.

Pre dive drills:
1 - Discuss the dive plan. Where you will enter, tie off to, which side to go down, how far down, how far back, what you plan to do, etc. If not known, then you will explain you will be exploring and your plans to turn when the time is right (when you hit the cave, or hit thirds, or any other factor, etc)

2 - Bubble Check
check each other''s 1st stage for any air leaks.

3 - Buddy Breath or abbreviated buddy breath.
Swim a few feet under while remaining trimmed out and give your regulator to your out of air buddy. Have him swim to your right and slightly in front of you. Hold his arm, leg, etc so they know you are there. Also hold the hose and guide it so it doesnt get stuck, rip out of your mouth, etc. When you can do this a few kicks, swap and do the drill the opposite way.
The abbreviated drill is just removing your entire primary long hose and handing it to your buddy above water to show him it''s not tangled up and can be deployed easily.

4 - Calculate Thirds.
Figure out 1/3 of a tank on the buddy with the smallest volume of air (tank size or lower pressure, etc).
If I have 3000, and my buddy has 2800 (and we both have the same size tank), then calculate using 2800. Since 2800 is not easily divisible by 1/3, then count down until you can reach a divisble number, such as 2700. In this case 1/3 of 2700 is 900. You will then subtract 900 from both your pressures. I will be turning at 2100, my buddy will be turning at 1800.

If your buddy has a different size tank, you will need to add/subtract 100 for each size level difference. For instance, you have an AL80, and your buddy has an LP85, he has one size up from you, so he has roughly 100psi more air than you do. Use this in your final calculations to add or subtract to your thirds calculation.

This site was a one dive site. It''s expensive, and with all the open water divers in it, it silts up FAST, with next to no flow to get the water clear.

Lead the dive in a 3 man team. Myself leading, Britt in the middle, and Mikey in the rear.
Went down the left side this time, It was hard finding places to tie to. The cavern floor was kind of stepping down, so I didn''t see some rocks and places to tie to at the bottom of each step, since I was swimming over them and had tunnel vision looking for places to tie to.
I was shown a few times where to tie to, and learned from that.

This time I tied off at the gold line and entered the cave zone a little. Tegg wanted to see how far I would go until I no longer considered myself in the cavern (where the glow of the entrance light stopped). I ended up stopping RIGHT on the spot he chose (he went in while we were changing tanks to pick he spot out already).
The cavern was pretty neat. It wasn''t very large or long, but it was cool. I got to look around some on the bottom, There was an air pocket in the ceiling, and some fish swimming around up there. There was a lot of silt near the ceiling on the slopes of the rock, so I stayed away from them.

Britt pulled an out of air on me and I let him choke some water for a second before blinding him with my light and giving him my reg. LOL oops.

We discussed the dive again, learning from everything I did. I took comments and criticism from everyone, and passed the course.

204 10/13/2012 4:18 PM FL Branford Little River Springs 36 64 Chris Seymour Cave1 Training Dive w/Chris (Shirley''s student). Did a fun cavern dive, no skills. I ran the line in, Chris was middle and Drew (Shirley''s friend) was 3rd man. The water levels were way up and the flow was crazy (normal according to Shirley). It was very hard getting in. The tree had fallen down in front of the cave entrance so there were lots of tie offs now. Once we got to the bottom, we all shined our lights around so to give Chris a good look of the cavern and cave entrance. Drew and I went for a quick dive into the cave to the top of the chimney and back. We had to stop a few times to let other teams past. As we exited the cave we viewed the light coming into the cavern. The rock walls were all orange and carved out really neat, it reminded me of the walls/ceilings in Little River, mixed with the sandy bottom of Peacock. Videoed from the turn to the way back out. Would like to do this dive again. Really cool dive. I really enjoyed it. Saw lots of fish, a diving habitat for previous explorers. Saw the main entrance where the flow was heavy, the bottom was scattered with lots of cool colored gravel/rock bits. On the way out I wanted to swim down the high flow run with the video camera. I got to the first rock restriction and the water just sucked me right out into the river for a fast ride. Crazy, but fun. This was the first dive trip that Melissa went on. It was just Shirley and I diving, and the 3 of us spent the weekend together at the dive house in Madison. Had a GREAT time all weekend. Also added 2lbs opposite my can light and trimmed out much better. 85   80.1 71.1 2 False False 1-Piece Wetsuit Cochran Commander       True

Took the camera in to do some photography. I tried using the strobe but gave up, its no good for a cave, just good for closeup stuff.
We went to end of line and back.
Took photos in the diamond sands restriction and the bedding plane. Used my light proped in the sand and rocks and a backup light for extra lighting,
Shot in Manual at 800ISO. The pics almost all came out super clear, but were very grainy from the high ISO. Need to try with ISO400 next dive.
Took pics in the cavern with the sunbeam. It just past noon and the lighting was great. Clear day so it was super bright and crisp.
Getting out of the water was FREEZING so we hoofed it back to the parking lot.
Dove my new computer, Shearwater Petrel. I LOVED IT.

220 2/3/2013 11:25 AM FL Luraville Telford 64 46 Shirley Kasser Dove Telford for the first time.
Since there is closed off private property surrounding the spring, the only entry is via the river. There is a boat ram to park by and the spring entrance is about 300+ft up river.
Since the Suwannee River water was freezing cold and I only had a wetsuit (Shirley and Drew were diving Dry) They each carried a tank for me while I hopped the fence and walked to the spring.
The dive was EXCELLENT. It was very silty, but it was shallow the entire dive, usually averaging 35ft or so. I ran the line in, and connected two gaps that went between two sinks. The sinkholes were pretty to approach and see the sunlight coming through the dark cave with all the woods around it up top. We made it a good 35+ mins in before Shirley turned the dive due to it just running on for a long time and she was not feeling well.
When we exited the spring, I shot a few photos in the entrance. We then swam back downriver to the boat ram. As soon as I got out of the warm water of the spring run and the cold river water hit me, it was a HUGE change.. going from 72*F to about 65*F instantly. I swam as fast as I could back to the boat ramp. GREAT dive, I want to do this again for sure.

221 2/3/2013 2:54 PM FL Luraville Peacock Springs 58 63 Drew Lynch dove Peacock 3 with Drew. Shirley sat out this dive due to her ears and cold.
This is the first time I had dove P3. It is a syphon and as such carries more risks, as you can quickly be sucked into the cave and have a harder time working your way out. Luckily the flow was almost non existant. Since it was non existant, it was also VERY silty. Drew ran the line in and we made our way in. I had to back my HID light out to the widest angle so it wouldn''t bounce back from the cloudy light with glare. It was VERY hazy inside, visibility wasnt very far, I couldn''t see the cave walls very clearly some of the time. But it was a very cool cave, I liked it''s formations, very large and tunnel like (like P1 peanut line lower area). We turned early due to it being a syphon. I took some pics of the cave crawfish, they were quite large and plentiful in this cave. Many were large shrimp sized but albino white. They would be startled by us then float in the water column for a minute I would then reach out for one to land on my hand and as soon as it touched down it would zip away into the darkness.

I lowered the camera ISO down to 400 this time and will hopefully get better results than the grainy ISO800.

222 3/16/2013 10:53 AM FL Williston Blue Grotto 25 29 Shirley Kasser Dove with Shirley and Barrie (recommended from Linda at CaveEx). She needed some confidence boosting and tips as she was a new sidemount diver (shes been diving doubles and has TDI Intro and Deco done already).

We re-setup her rig for the better and gave some other tips and tweaks.

We did 3 dives.
1st dive to check us out on the platforms. THis was the first dive I carried a stage bottle around to get used to it, figure out how to hook it up, etc.
Shirley tested me out on taking it on and off a few times. which went well. It was pretty easy. I couldn''t clip an 02 bottle on thoiugh as her tank was setup not for my rigging. I need to add some more d-rings to accommodate for the shorter 02 bottle rigging.

2nd dive we dove down around the base of the cavern and came back up.

3rd dive we dove around the base again, I tied off to the line at the bottom and explored a little side area, but turned around and headed back out as I didnt want Barrie following in (silty and tight). I totally wanted to see back there though and easily could have slipped in. But not this dive.

I really dont care for Blue Grotto, its expensive and boring. For the same experience, Paradise is a WAY better dive and more fun, more to see, etc.

He and his family were really nice! Good divers.

We geared up and it started to storm, lightning, all around and then started to hail badly. We just got in the water quick and dove.
Made it past Sue Sink about 800ft or so in (according to Shirley from looking at a map) before turning on Cam''s turn pressure.
I had 100psi to go before turning at that point.
Made it back out, swam around the sink for a bit while watching some big classes flail about.
Looked in another hole that connected to the main cave on the opposite side of the sink.

Had a little SI, then walked over to the Manatee head spring...

226 3/24/2013 10:48 AM FL Chiefland Manatee Spring 17 53 Shirley Kasser .... Jumped in the Manatee head spring and wanted to find where the gold line started. The flow was so strong Shirley gave up and I took the reel in. I had to shimmy slowly down a log to even get to the bottom of the restriction before clinging to any rock or wall I could, the flow was crazy here. The ling running was ugly, and Shirley ended up taking some of the slack up that flowed behind me (which I didnt know until after we got back out).
We finally found the gold line and I tied into it. Then we turned and exited. Shirley was tangled in line at the entrance log so Cam freed her. We surfaced and discussed the craziness. The gold line was half burried in the sand, making it hard to find until it emerged a little ways past where it started, I traced it back and pulled it out of the sand to find it tied to a stake.

228 4/6/2013 11:25 AM FL Orange City Blue Spring 58 75 Capt Solo Dove with a few people from Dayo. It was a fun dive, but some of the things they said worried me (air sharing and ok with it on a boat dive, sitting all over the cavern shelves, bringing lights into a state park cavern without proper certs. We didnt do anything we shouldn''t have, but I kept an eye on them the whole time.
It was still a great dive and an enjoyable day.

I had not seen the sign that was installed since we had put it in a year ago and it was holding up pretty well. There was just algae on back sides and concrete and the sign itself was clean and free from anything. The organization logos on the bottom were scratched off by someone. The angle brackets had a little surface rust on them but nothing major. The rear ubolts were covered in crud, but rust free when I wiped one away.
Some cavern people were using the sign for a tie off. Yay.

Dove a dive plan that John provided and practiced skills.
He gave us two depths and a deco schedule to simulate. We were not doing actual deco dives during these dives.
Dove to 100ft, did helicopter turns in both directions, backfinned and stage tank off/on. Dipped down into the the cave for a minute, turned, then followed Deco schedule at John''s signal.

2nd dive was the exact same plan, John cut the deco procedure short as we were running low on air.

I gave a site briefing but did not have any further dive briefing prepared.
I listened to what John said as a tech dive master, such as technical needs for the divers, where things are at the site, emergency contact numbers for the dive site/area, etc. Also got a different point of view on guiding someone that was not as skilled, such as a cavern guide: stay off the bottom, use the ropes along the ceiling (less for the other person to think about if they are less skilled). Also keeping a constant eye on them since I am not diving with my skilled friends, I am leading someone I don''t know into a technical environment. I need to constantly keep an eye on them, reassure them with OKs, check their gas usage, etc. John gave me a lot of good advice and from a different perspective. It was good hearing this from someone else besides my instructor friends.

We setup dive #1 with all the lines. We ran into the Ear and ran the primary. Drew dropped off his o2 tank and we continued on. We got to the park bench and put the jump in there for the bone line. We turned shortly after.
Drew''s tanks got dropped before this dive, some students on the other side of the stand had roughly set his tanks down which tipped the stand and knocked Drew''s doubles over onto the ground. It sheared off one of the regs from the screw/din post. he lost some gas but he got it shut off in time before losing too much. He was able to repair it with a backup 1st stage. This must have bothered him as he was hoovering the gas both dives, and I know he doesn''t normally dive that way.

2nd dive Doug joined us. We went into the Ear again and down the bone line. Doug then got in front since he knew where the white room was but made a wrong turn anyway. We got back to the line but then Doug was on his 3rds so we turned.

I had about 12mins of deco to do at the log in the ear. The dive was a lot of fun. This was my first deco dive, and first stage dive.

There was a big ski rope through most of the cave that I was in to pull yourself along in the flow. The flow wasn''t THAT bad, but I used the rope anyway...why not save some gas!
Since this cave is private owned, traffic is a LOT lighter here...thus the cave was in better shape. Most of the walls were black, which absorbed light.

Dove 1st dive to 130ft with a full planned deco plan written out on my slate.
This was the first time using o2 and carrying 4 bottles at once.

I had issues getting the o2 bottle on and had help getting it on. I couldn''t get it off when we got to the deco log, but finally managed to do so.
We descended to 130ft, dropped off my AL80 deco tank on the line, then picked it back up and started our deco plan.
I had issues getting my tank back on, the snapclip was just in my hand wrong. I was ascending and maintaining buoyancy though while struggling with it. I finally got it back on and we continued our ascent and stopped at all our stops.
I forgot to switch my computer at the 1st gas switch, but remembered to after a minute into it.
We got to the deco log and did another gas switch.
I didn''t tell shirley she didnt switch to her tank as I figured she just didnt want to waste the gas and was just there to make sure I did it all correctly... BUT..I should have pointed it out ANYWAY because that is complacent. She may have totally forgot or something and it may have actually been important on this dive to do this gas switch, so I need to ALWAYS point it out even if I know the person well and how they dive.
I shot the lift bag and we maintained our stop at 20ft.

I clipped the o2 bottle off to my crotch ring and chest ring this time and it sat just fine there. If I am somewhere we are just going to travel a short distance and drop the tank off, this might be a good spot for it for me. Otherwise, I need to re-rig some stuff to get it on full time.

I tied the bag off and we surfaced.

We had a 30min SI. Doug was done and got out of the water. we debriefed and went over our next dive plan for the 2nd dive. Same plan, but this time Shirley would be an out of town diver that I was guiding.

I used my same tanks both dives since they were very short.

We descended, and I made sure she was behind me the whole time, checking and signaling that she was ok at various points of the dive.
We got to 130ft, dropped my bottle off, put it back on flawlessly this time. We made our ascent and did all our stops. We did our gas switch and I remembered my computer switch this time and made sure my buddy did the same thing. When we got to 70ft (bottom of the chimney) my buddy descended while looking at the surrounding area, so I motioned to come back up again and held our stop another minute. We ascended into the chimney and my "mask had an issue" (shirley wanted me to give it to her)... so I took it off and felt around for my spare and got it put on while maintaining position wedged in the chimney. We finished our ascent to the deco log and did our gas switches. I made sure my buddy did her switch and changed her computer over. She then kept losing bouyancy so I kept having to motion her back down. I finally grabbed her hand and put it on a rope that was tied to the tree so she could maintain her stop. we cut the dive skills/drills after this.

I then gave her my camera and did a photo with my sunglasses on like I had done in the keys on my first check out dive :D

The dive went well, We debriefed and she gave me all my cards down in the water while doug took pics.
